Attention! Attention!- Poundland Stila Scandal

Upon watching the recent Dispatches documentary titled ''Secrets of Poundland'' I am absolutely disgusted.
Documentary Youtube link here

Now don't get me wrong I am a fan. On every shopping trip I find myself in at least one store to see if there are any bargains to be had. Now, after watching this documentary I am not so sure. The documentary highlights the tricks Poundland plays which sometimes dupe customers into thinking they are getting better value when in fact they are not. To be honest as far as I'm concerned-although don't get me wrong I'm not comfortable or happy that such a practise takes places-this is standard practise from retailers. They also highlight that the lack of safety of the toy called the ''Funtastic Light Up Squid'' -which name is apt as it bursts into flames frighteningly quickly.

The bit that left me truly disgruntled-and I'm sure once it comes to be common knowledge many more of us beauty bloggers will feel the same-was the section on Stila make up products. I, myself have seen them in the stores. I, myself have been tempted to buy them. Why wouldn't anyone? Its a champagne priced brand at a truly discounted price. Poundland do say that they buy products from surplus and from over sees, the documentary highlights this source is called ''the grey market''. Dispatches bought the Stila products and told Stilas UK distributer Glorious Brands that they had found their stuff in Poundland.  They said ''we have no idea how Poundland purchased these lines'' ''it wasn't from Stila or Glorious Brands'' they then go on to say,''these products are over 8 years old and havent been manufactured since'' then adding, ''we are not happy about seeing our products in Poundland''

The thing is, make up has an expiry date and yes, I have often ignored this fact for-depending on the products-6 months or so untill they are fully used or I decide to throw them away. Given the fact that there is so much testing on make up products, testing that sometimes involves cruelty to animals, we should really take the approximately 8 year out of expiry date seriously. The products have been tested and found to go past their sell by date after a certain time. After this time the products are not deemed safe to be sold or in fact used.

As a consumer I trusted the fact that these products were safe to be used by me. I expected them to be up to standard and within the expiry date. They are not. This means that those who have used the product may be at risk. How? I do not know but I know that regulations and tests are put in place to protect us as consumers from harmful products. This is being ignored.

I hope that this knowledge is passed on among the community. I would ask that you respect the time and effort I put in to writing this post and credit this blog (as I have credited the Dispatches documentary) as the place where you came to know about this scandal. Although I am aware many may not do this.

What do you think of this ?

  2. I've heard that but don't know what to think. I got Stila dry shampoo from there and it's still being sold in Sephora in the exact same packaging. Surely it wouldn't be the EXACT same thing if it was made 8 years ago.. Dunno what to think really O.o Poundland is a dodgy place but I sort of think that maybe Stila just didn't want to be associated with Poundland and although it may have been sold to the Poundland, it should not be 'talked bout' like that if it makes any sense? Really don't know O.o xx

    1. I understand what your saying, and I had this thought myself but you can always look at the year of manufacture to see how old it is. I dont think it would be legal for them so say in the letter that they have no idea where they got it from. Not only that but I also doubt that they would sell the products to pound land for such a discounted price. I think these were in some sort of container for years, then sold to Poundland. :)

  5. I can't believe that this is actually news to people. This is the exact reason I don't shop in poundland! Not worth the risk of buying fake and/or old, past their use-by date products. xxx

    1. Surely you can understand why it is? Customers trust and expect products to be of reasonable quality and in their sell by date.

    1. I know what you mean but I'm quite weary about what I put on my face considering how much I spend on products to keep it a certain way! x
